Guru Purnima: A Day to Reflect, Not Just Celebrate

Every year, Guru Purnima arrives as an occasion to honor the Gurus in our lives. As days like Mother's Day and Father's Day have become popular, there's a concern that focusing on just one day for appreciation might overshadow the true meaning. This sentiment is especially important while considering Guru Purnima. Let's ensure our celebration goes beyond this day and reflects a deeper respect for our Gurus and Acharyas. It is of utmost importance for yoga sadhaks to properly understand the idea and intention behind this day.

“Sri Guru Sarvakaranabhuta Shakti”

This auspicious day reminds us to express our gratitude to our Gurus and reflect on our spiritual growth and learning. On this occasion, let us try to understand the importance of this day.

The word "Guru" is formed from two Sanskrit terms, "gu" and "ru," which mean darkness and dispeller, implying that Guru is the one who removes the darkness of ignorance and ignites our inner light.

Why is Guru Purnima Important for Yoga Practitioners?

Like any successful journey, yoga sadhana requires a Sankalpa. Its application requires the necessary tools and techniques and a teacher to guide the right path while navigating the difficulties.

A knowledgeable guru empowers us to use our bodies as instruments for spiritual exploration. They answer the questions that arise from our limited knowledge and experience. A true guru isn't someone who simply imparts information from books but who shares the wisdom gained from their journey.

The Role of a Guru

The path to self-realization is a challenging journey without a map. The knowledge gained by us mortals through our senses is limited. It requires the wisdom of those who have traveled the path before us. The Guru acts as that guide, helping us refine our practices and overcome obstacles. A true Guru empowers us to transform our bodies into instruments capable of receiving and embodying wisdom.

In today's world, there is no dearth of self-proclaimed gurus. However, it's important to remember that "Guru" is not a title someone gives themselves but a state recognized by those seeking wisdom.

Types of Guru

Traditional scriptures speak of six types of gurus, each guiding us on different levels of our spiritual journey:

  • Preragan Guru: Provides knowledge about diverse paths to self-realization.

  • Suchakan Guru: Creates interest and direction for a chosen path.

  • Vachikan Guru: Explains scriptures in their own unique way.

  • Darshakan Guru: Reveals the truth through scriptures.

  • Shikshakan Guru: Helps students progress further in their sadhana.

  • Bodhakan Guru offers Jnana Deeksha, a powerful initiation for spiritual upliftment.

Some fortunate seekers may find a single guru who guides them through all these levels.

The Ultimate Goal: Freedom from Suffering

Ultimately, a guru helps us remove the veil of ignorance that causes suffering in this limited material world. They guide us towards limitless joy and spiritual freedom.

On Guru Purnima, let us celebrate the Gurus in our lives with deep gratitude. Their teachings and guidance are the fuel that propels us forward on our spiritual journey.
