Equipment in Yoga: Essential and Supporting

These days, the number of people who are interested in the practice of yoga is increasing by leaps and bounds. Everyone wants to reap its benefits, which are indeed many. Are you one of them? Then certainly, you must have some confusion regarding the required equipment. Mats, straps, and blocks are a few among the list. However, as seasoned yoga teachers from Hatha Vidya Traditional School of Yoga, we understand that the most essential equipment is within the aspirant; that is you.

It is your dedication and commitment that fuel the journey. Intentional and consistent efforts bring the fruits, rather than mere tools. But aren't external tools significant in the practice? Confused, right? Don't fret; we are here to guide you through this. Let's offer some clarity.

Basic Equipment

As more people gravitate toward practices like yoga, the tools and equipment associated with them are in high demand. Certain basic equipment involved are given below.

Yoga Mat

A mat is an absolute must to engage in yoga. Using a good mat can help you provide reliable grip, cushioning, flexibility, and a space for the practice. An appropriate mat can act as a stable surface and aid in preventing slips while practicing. You don’t need an expensive or fancy mat to start with. A simple yet usable mat is enough.

Comfortable Clothing

The dress you wear is important while practicing yoga. Aesthetics is of the lowest priority while you are in a yoga session. Always choose attire that is comfortable enough to wear and move. Avoid tight-fitting clothes. Your clothing must facilitate a smooth practice rather than hinder it. You must be able to breathe free and feel free.

Supporting Props

Apart from the basic equipment, certain tools are available to bolster the practice. These are not essential; however, when used, they can enhance the quality and efficiency of the exercise.

Blocks and Straps

Blocks and straps are additional props that can enhance your flexibility and aid in stretching deep and holding a proper posture. These help while you are practicing a complex or difficult yoga pose. If you are finding it difficult to extend your reach, you can use a strap. If you are stiff or have any physical limitations that hinder your performance, these can be of great help.

Bolsters

Bolsters are supporting pillow-like equipment that helps you relax. If you struggle to lie in Savasana, you can rely on bolsters.

The Most Important Equipment

Although external help can facilitate the performance, it is the individual and his body that are the ultimate tools in yoga. Yoga is an effort to control the body and mind and thereby regulate the unregulated aspects and pranic energy. This results in realizing your body efficiency and achieving your true potential. So, the body is the instrument working on which we derive the desired results.
